Scopus: new link to research datasets now available

Research dataset links can now be found on the Scopus Document details page. Through collaboration  with the Data Literature Interlinking (DLI) service and Scholix, Scopus is able to link articles with  datasets when available on the external data repository. Now, when research datasets are available  on the external data repository for an article, the Scopus Document details page will include  a “Related Research Data” sidebar, located to the right of the article details.

Nowomics: stay up-to-date with the latest life science research

Nowomics is a new current awareness service that enables biological scientists to follow genes, species, diseases and keywords to create a personalised news feed of new life science papers and research. It helps take the slog out of keeping up with research literature and provides new and popular papers in a personalised, searchable news feed instead of sifting though  email alerts and tables of content. Data sources include:

• PubMed - NCBI
• MESH - US National Library of Medicine
• Altmetric, tweets and Mendeley bookmarks - altmetric.com
• SNIP journal impact indicator - CWTS
• Entrez Gene, gene names and symbols - NCBI
• HGNC, human gene names and symbols - HUGO
• Homologene orthologs - NCBI

The Irish Times new Student Hub and free digital subscription for students

The Irish Times launches the Student Hub toda;  a website intended to be the primary online resource for third-level students in Ireland. Student Hub will carry news relating to on-campus developments and issues facing students today, as well as developments  new relating to arts, music, health and politics. The aim of the Student Hub is to provide students (no matter what institution they attend) with an opportunity to engage with each other and to stay informed of what’s going on in each other’s colleges. 

Upon registration, students will qualify, free of charge, for a full Irish Times digital subscription.

From the newspaper’s valuable archive material stretching back over 150 years, the digital subscription will give students full access to all content on Ireland’s leading news website. The Irish Times Breaking News App is free to download as part of the subscription, giving students the opportunity to keep up to date with the latest happenings in Ireland and across the globe.

Student subscribers will also be eligible to enter the Cash For College competition offering the opportunity to win €250 every weekday until the end of term.

The 12 Apps of Christmas site is now open as a free resource and is covered by the Creative Commons Licence CC BY-NC-SA 2.0.  Some great ideas and suggestions for managing learning, research, information and teaching resources via a selection of apps.

Research beyond Google

Research Beyond Google: 119 Authoritative, Invisible, and Comprehensive Resources is a collection of deep web resources that go beyond the surface web results found on Google. Google, currently the largest search engine has approx 50 billion web pages indexed, but it can only index the visible web, aka the searchable web. But the invisible web (or deep web) is estimated to be 500 times bigger than the searchable web and consists of atabases and results of specialty search engines that the more popular search engines are unable to index. Compiled by the OEDB, some of these listed research resources may be familiar already via the DIT Library website, but have a look and see what else might work for you.

Sense about Science chemistry student resource

For all DT261, DT212 and DT299 first year students. A useful resource for assignments and class debates is Sense about Science. The resource has a database of over 5,000 scientists, from Nobel prize winners to postdocs and PhD students. They work in partnership with scientific bodies, research publishers, policy makers, the public and the media, to change public discussions and awareness about science and evidence. JournalTOCs - shortcuts to keeping research up-to-date

JournalTOCs is the largest free collection of scholarly tables of contents (TOCs) from over 20,000 journals for use by students and researchers. JournalTOCs alerts you when new issues of your followed journals are published.  Most followed journals for September were Nature, Science, NEJM, the Lancet, and JAMA.
