Google Instant search comes to town - sort of

Google Instant is a new search enhancement that shows results as you type. This means that you can scan a results page while you type and you don’t have to finish typing your full search term, or even press “search.”.  You have to use google.com - it's not available on google.ie yet. Could be useful, could be annoying...give it a try and see..... For some less than complimentary feedback see Charlie Brooker's comments and for some hints n tips see this blog entry.

ACM Digital Library update

A gentle reminder to all ACM Digital Library users:
DIT's ACM subscription covers full-text access to the ejournals only. Unfortunatley it doesn't include access to conference proceedings or letters of the ACM. If you need a conf proc eprint see information and applications forms for an Inter Library Loan and we'll try and get you the info asap.

      Is technology dumbing us down?

The internet debate rumbles on. Many of us are familiar with the arguments both for and against the idea that google is making us stupid and Nicholas Carr's latest book The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains fuels the debate arguing that the internet’s info-bites and quick-links format may be impairing our capacity for in-depth reading and thinking. Read a review and interview here and keep an eye out for the book in Kevin St Library.
