Reaxys: new chemical database

New to DIT Library's database collection Reaxys is a chemical database solution which integrates searches for reaction and substance data with synthesis planning and chemical sourcing.

Reaxys offers excerpted compounds and related factual properties, reaction and synthesis information, as well as bibliographic data – in inorganic, organometallic and organic chemistry research. Content is drawn from selected journals and patents so that only experimentally validated data are included in Reaxys. Small molecules (organic, inorganic and organometallic compounds) are only excerpted if they have:

A chemical structure;
An experimental fact (property, preparation, reaction);
A credible citation.

As well as Kaye and Laby Online at the NPL try the NIST Reference on Contants, Unit and Uncertainty and CODATA (Committe for Data for Science and Technology) as well as the Physical Measurement Laboratory (PML). The latest values and adjustments of the constants are also posted there as well as a searchable bibliography.

The SDAR journal is a new journal published by CIBSE Ireland and the School of Electrical Engineering (SEES) in DIT. It is supported by Airtricity and produced by Pressline Ltd.

The journal is a result of continuing collaboration between the professional organisations, industry and academia. It emphasises the need to move from ideologically based sustainable engineering to proven low energy solution solutions. It is a vehicle to increase research in engineering to meet the modern challenges posed. There is a strong spine of proven industry solutions as well as well as significant contributions from students, graduates and researchers in academia. All papers are evidence based with deep analysis and critical reflection and are peer reviewed by an expert reviewing panel. The intention of CIBSE is to increase applied research in the industry whilst taking the fear out of the word research for working engineers and companies. The intention for SEES is to provide opportunities for research students to gain access to data and link with the industry experts in this field to enhance the quality of their programmes and research in engineering.

Library Ireland Week

The “Off the Street” programme will begin each evening at 6.00pm on Monday 7th March through to Friday 11th March in DIT Library Kevin Street as part of Library Ireland Week. The series will open on the Monday with a dialogue between the visual work of Colm Desmond and the written word of poet and novelist Oran Ryan. This is followed on Tuesday by a open mike set of readings by established poets such as Eamonn Lynskey, Ross Hattaway , Raven and Karl Parkinson. Wednesday night will feature readings by Steve Conway while Gréagóir O Dúill the bilingual poet will take the stage on Thursday evening. The series will conclude on Friday.

Bloodmed update

Please be advised that there is no longer a facility for DIT institutional access to the Bloodmed database. This database will be removed from the A-Z list of databases early next week. NSAI database now available

A new NSAI database subscription is available from today providing access to Irish and international (ISO) standards.
Getting started tips:

NSAI is accessible via the Library Databases webpage under Standards (Irish & ISO)
When using the database for the first time remember to click on the 'Login' tab at the top of the NSAI hompage to get to the search box and full text facility.
To open a pdf file use the Click2View link.
Access from outside the DIT network is via staff/student number and Library PIN
If you require a British Standard contact the Library for an Inter Library Loan.

British Standards Institute database - the bad news & the good news

The bad news: due to budget cuts DIT Library's subscription to the BSi British Standards Institute database is cancelled effective Monday 29th November 2010.

The better news: the National Standards Authority of Ireland database (NSAI) will be available in the new year. This provides full text access to Irish and International (ISO) standards. An interim trial access point is available until 17/12/10 at http://www.standards.ie/ . Please contact the library for log-in details.
